'Painting in Dali's Garden'

Cadaques, Spain
September 17 - 30, 2006

With ROBERT VENOSA and MARTINA HOFFMANN

Under the guidance of Visionary masters, Robert Venosa and Martina Hoffmann, the highly acclaimed 'Painting The Fantastic' workshop will take place in September 17 -30, 2006, in one of the most romantic and historically creative locations on the Mediterranean - Cadaques, Spain, home of Salvador Dali, and playground to many of the artistic luminaries of the past century.
Set on a charmed island, a stone's throw away from the shore, the beautiful Villa S'Arenella becomes home and studio to max. 25 participants who will learn a painting technique that has been handed down from master to master from the 15th century to the present. The 'Misch Technique' was discovered by Jan Van Eyck in 1460 and utilized by such notables as Leonardo DaVinci, Dürer, Max Ernst, and Ernst Fuchs, amongst many others. The updated, simplified version, as taught by Venosa and Hoffmann, makes entry into painting highly accessible for the beginner, and adds significantly to the repertoire of the experienced artist. Included in the tuition will be accommodations at the villa, breakfast and lunch for the entire 2 weeks, several dinners, a local fisherman's paella, a boat-ride and picnic, and a visit to the Dali house. The workshop will be held from Monday through Friday of each week, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Transportation from the island to the shore (approximately 80 yards) will be continuous from morning 'til night. Motor scooters and bikes (and autos) are readily available for rent in the town, and the plethora of restaurants and coffee houses are some of the finest on the Med.
Gourmet Mediterranean food, boating, swimming, scuba diving, windsurfing, visits to the Dali house, the Dali Museum, and the myriad of other pleasures that surround the magical village of Cadaques, are all available to make your creative and social experience unforgettable.

THE WORKSHOP

The Fantastic 'implies a lack of restraint in the imagination', and such is the approach to painting taken in this unique workshop. For beginners and accomplished artists alike, this workshop is for all those wishing to tap into the artistic capabilities that lie within their reach and discover the joy and illuminating power of painting. Utilizing a simplified approach, which the leaders call 'Serendipitous Exploitation', an emotional outpouring of color and form is first applied to a surface, followed by studied, individual detailing of the personal visions the imagination presents. Through this simple process, the artist can begin to create essential form and color that is enlivening, enlightening and amazingly fantastic. The premise: to exercise right-brain potential in a non threatening, effortless, and exuberant manner that instills joy, self discovery, and newfound self-esteem. With an emphasis on individual attention, this workshop covers the needs and desires of all involved while exceeding all expectations.
Participants will also be introduced to the 'Misch Technique', as employed down through the centuries by such artists as Van Eyck, Rembrandt and Max Ernst, and will work with an updated simplified version. Limited to 19 participants, these workshops fill up quite fast, and an early registration is recommended.

THE LOCATION

One is absolutely captivated the moment one enters Cadaques, a small fishing village surrounded by the Mediterranean's most romantic bay, just 40 miles from the French border. Besides Dali, practically every artist of note in the 20th century has been lured by the pureblood siren song of inspiring vistas, as well as its deep-blue waters and hard-core hedonism into which one lustily dives. Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Garcia Lorca, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, David Hockney, Walt Disney - even Albert Einstein - have all sipped a little absinth, skinny-dipped, and most assuredly sensed a different flow of joy there where the Pyrenees slide into the Sea. Exceptional restaurants, hyperactive coffee houses and bars, private bays and coves, all illuminated by the magical light that surrounds Cadaqu?s, day and night. Every one, sooner or later, returns to Candia?s. The allure is irresistible.
