The raw power of nature and the all-pervasive earth magic and spirit that touches all people who have lived in this rich environment, have had a lasting influence on my life.
But it is the women of Africa that I remember most. Images of their strong beauty, sensuality, grace and earthiness, their nuturing nature, sense of calm and deep acceptance paired with a childlike happiness have remained with me to this day. And it is in Africa that I encountered the Earth Goddess in the human flesh for the first time. Later her image was to resurface in my sculptures and my three dimensional work is undoubtedly inspired by the time I spent in Africa.
The Goddess Series bears certain primitive elements which can also be found in ancient Goddess Art as well as indigenous African sculpture. It explores the female form and I've played with bodyly proportions to reflect the great beauty and variety of female shapes. May this offer relief from the mainstream stereotypical portrayal of women.
Some of the earliest sculptures known to us are representations of the female, and our attraction to it is deep, as it is within this form that our planetary life begins. The Goddess Series is my interpretation of the ancient Goddess archetypes and encourages reconsideration of our connection with Mother Earth. So a part of my work today focuses on the nurturing element of the Sacred Feminine, to redirect awareness to its beauty and power and to the ways in which its strength can be integrated and honored for the greater benefit of us all. This would bring about a healthier balance between the masculine and feminine forces without which our planet cannot survive."
